What is Inclusive Writing?

Did you know that there is a writing style and a set of guidelines for something called Inclusive Writing?

Inclusive writing is writing that uses a set of principles and techniques designed to accomplish two goals:

1) to promote inclusion and respect for diversity, and;

2) to eliminate all forms of discrimination based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability or any other identity factor

The guidelines are based on a set of key principles for respectful and non-discriminatory communications, including respecting people’s wishes, and making language choices that are respectful of diversity.

In a countries as diverse as Canada and the United States, we cannot always assume that the words we use resonate, make sense for, or apply to everyone.

If you have a set of communications that need some editing using the guidelines of inclusive writing, let's talk. Reach out to me at annemarie@wordsforimpact.com to discuss how you can incorporate inclusive writing into your communication strategy.
